Numerous new and innovative cutting tools to be displayed at MACH 2008 include solid carbide drilling with the versatility of a replaceable head system.
Having booked the largest stand in the company’s history of attending the UK’s MACH machine tool shows, 350m2, WNT (UK) is planning a display of numerous new and innovative cutting tools. Included will be dedicated areas to explain how its innovative logistics system enables over 99% ex-stock, next day, delivery to customers in the UK.
Designed by the world-renowned Metron company, WNT’s stand, will be standardised across Europe.
‘The stand has been designed to allow a wide range of products to be displayed in technology groups while at the same time providing an opportunity for customers to sit down and have an informal chat over a drink or, for more detailed discussions to take place,’ said Tony Pennington, WNT (UK) managing director.
He added: ‘Having such a large stand, and in such a prime location next to the leading machine tool companies, will allow us to present the new WNT products in a much better way and also to have more of them on show, making it easier for visitors to look at and discuss how we can help them achieve production cost savings through the application of these new technologies’.
* solid carbide drilling, WTX Change - the development of the WTX Change series blends the performance advantages of solid carbide drilling with the versatility of a replaceable head system, without any detriment to component quality.
Using a unique ‘radial tooth’ interface between the solid carbide drill head and the drill body ensures that maximum torque is transmitted in a safe, accurate and reliable fashion and maximum feedrates can be achieved.
Each drill head has a multi-layer Ti700 coating, which is complemented by special surface treatments to extend the life of the cutting edges.
In addition they feature a four-facet drill point to ensure precise hole positioning.
The drill heads are quickly and easily changed by means of a simple screw mechanism The drills are available between 16 and 32mm diameter with diameter to length ratios of 3x and 5x diameter (D).
* WTX Solid Carbide Drill Type AL - this high performance solid carbide drill is particularly suited to machining aluminium but, can also be applied to other non-ferrous materials such as copper or brass.
With cutting speeds up to 400m/min and feedrates of 0.7mm/rev achieved with minimal cutting forces the high performance machining of delicate components is not a problem, said WNT.
WNT told manufacturingtalk.com that the use of a multi-layer Ti1005 coating, which has been specifically developed to enhance the cutting of abrasive high silicon aluminium, increases tool life by approximately 100% over conventional tools.
Self-centering is achieved by use of a four-facet drill point and the drill point and flute design produces a stable platform to achieve optimum hole geometry even when drilling through cross holes.
Swarf evacuation is enhanced by the 20 deg helix angle and through tool coolant.
The WTX range extends from 3mm to 20mm diameter and is available up to 12 x D.
* Solid carbide End Mills Type ACR - the ACR range of cutters, developed specifically for machining aluminium, is a recent addition to WNT’s High Performance Cutting portfolio.
These cutters are of particular benefit to the aerospace industry where a high percentage of the parent material is removed, sometimes up to 70%.
The cutter geometry is optimised to improve swarf removal when machining aluminium; The flutes of the ACR cutter are also designed to create maximum volume for swarf to aid its removal; the extremely fine micro-grain carbide, the polished surface of the flutes and the ‘in-flute’ coolant supply help resist the possibility of material sticking to the cutter, while the overall geometry reduces the cutting forces and in turn allows speeds and feeds to be increased.
* Solid carbide End Mills Type W-HPC - WNT’s Type W-HPC solid carbide end mills deliver high performance with an extremely soft cut for use in applications on aluminium with up to 12% silicon content.
The Ti1005 multi-layer coating is ideal for this application as it has a high micro hardness and a maximum operating temperature of 600 deg C, which when combined with its very smooth surface it suppresses the formation of edge wear and built up edge.
W-HPC tools have an extremely quiet cutting action and it is possible to cut full slots to 1.5 x D depth with high feed rates.
As well as a wide range of diameters, which extends from 3mm to 25mm the W-HPC cutters are available with a variety of corner radii to accommodate the majority of aerospace applications.
* indexable insert milling Type HFC - conventional, ramping, and plunge milling at feed rates up to 3mm/rev are all possible with the new indexable insert HFC range of milling cutters from WNT.
The close pitch design of the cutter body along with the positive face angle that is presented to the component allow feedrates that are not achievable with conventional cutters.
Additionally, the design of the body and the inserts combine to direct the cutting forces axially, eliminating vibration and allowing the HFC cutters to be used effectively on low powered machines while maintaining process security.
* ZSK 100 Vice - the compact ZSK 100 vice system is a cost-effective solution for gripping components, particularly where a rotary indexer is being used to give 3 + 2 axis movement on a machining centre.
At only 280mm long it is suitable for most applications of this type and the combination of axially ground 20mm wide slots as well as three 25mm diameter mating holes make it compatible with most clamping systems, including Zero Point.
Where quick changeovers are required the patented quick change jaw system means that jaws can be changed in a matter of seconds to make full use of the vice’s grip span of 0 - 210mm.
The master jaws also feature tapped holes for use with a range of accessories that can be attached, such as soft jaw faces and part supports.
While the ZSK 100 may be compact the high-quality, nodular cast iron, base permits gripping forces of up to 30kN to be achieved.
And, finally, for ease of use the base is designed with optimal swarf removal in mind and even includes swarf ‘wipers’ to keep the mechanism clear at all times.
* ZSG Mini Vice - the second new vice from WNT is the ZSG Mini, which offers maximum gripping force from the smallest of gripping surface areas as it is capable of producing 20kN of force with only 65Nm of torque being applied.
With a total overall length of only 170mm the ZSG Mini is extremely versatile yet is designed with full functionality and with five axis machining in mind.
Tool access is optimised from all sides and the totally enclosed design ensures trouble-free operation as swarf cannot interfere with the vice’s operation.
For additional flexibility an extensive jaw program is available as standard to ensure that a wide variety of components can be gripped over its 0-152mm gripping range without resorting to non-standard jaws.
* Parting and grooving SXhighlight - WNT’s SXhighlight is the next generation of the established FX parting system.
The ideals behind SXhighlight were to provide functionality and handling but with maximum stability under cutting conditions.
Functionality is provided by the scaling applied by means of lasers, which makes adjusting of the cut length simple and accurate, every time.
The use of a blade-type toolholder significantly increases the application range without losing any efficiency, strength or precision.
Finite element analysis was used to create the optimum insert seat and clamping system.
The result is that the insert is always in the same position and the retaining system ensures good insert security under the most arduous of cutting conditions.
* Multi Head boring system - with the largest diameter range currently on the market at 3mm to 320mm diameter achieved with just a single fine adjustment unit, the WNT Multi Head boring system is a cost-effective and high quality solution for small to medium sized companies that have a requirement to machine a wide range of close diameter bores.
Such a wide range of diameters is achieved by utilising a number of boring bars/bridges to achieve the required diameter with the fine adjustment coming from the single spindle head, which is available with either HSK, DIN 69871, or MAS-BT 40 taper or modular connections.
The benefit of having just one spindle head to cover such a wide range of diameters is a reduction in tooling costs by up to 70%.
Small to medium-sized sub-contractors are also able to greatly reduce their tooling inventories by stocking just one head and a variety of boring bars and bridging units.
The Multi-Head system is available as individual catalogue items or can be purchased as a boxed kit to provide a complete boring system for bores from 9.75 to 164mm.
The diameter range can then be increased from 3 to 320mm when required by the purchase of additional boring bars and a bridge unit, etc.
* Digihead fine boring system - precision boring moves into the digital age with the introduction of the WNT Swiss Tool Digihead with its high resolution digital display allowing micron level adjustments to be made.
Digihead features integrated direct distance measuring technology that is linked to the unit’s display to show precise radial adjustment values, allowing simple, on-machine adjustment.
The use of this technology eliminates any potential errors that may be caused by backlash in conventional boring heads.
The range of units can cover bore diameters between 3.0 and 88.1mm and the quality of manufacture enables them to be operated at speeds up to 16 000 rev/min.
Further versatility is provided by the availability of units as either a stand-alone Digihead with a HSK-A 63; MAS BT40; or DIN 69871 (SK40), or modular machine interface or a complete kits that include the Digihead and four boring bars.
