A UK subcontractor has purchased a Yamazaki Mazak multi-tasking turning centre, with 37kW milling power, to machine nuclear industry components in ‘one hit’ or as few set-ups as possible.
Coventry, UK-based subcontractor, PowerKut, ordered a Yamazaki Mazak Integrex e-650H II multi tasking mill-turn centre at the recent UK MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition PowerKut has a contract to machine nuclear components and wished to do as much work as possible in a single set-up

Yamazaki to stage ‘EMO Encore’ for UK buyers
UK buyers and specifiers of machine tools who were unable to attend the EMO exhibition can view and assess new Mazak machine tools at Yamazaki Machinery, Worcester, January 29-February 1.
The Integrex e-650H II has a 45kW main spindle and a 37kW milling spindle and will be ideal for a number of projects that the company is currently in negotiations for, said Yamazaki Mazak.
PowerKut’s managing director, Peter Everitt, said: “Buying a machine of this size and capability is important to PowerKut on a number of levels.
The 4m bed length is crucial for one particular contract that we have in the nuclear sector and the overall mill-turn capacity of the machine will enable us to complete work in a single set-up”.
He continued: “This will allow increased unmanned running, reduce the risks to components during transfer of parts and, crucially, will improve overall accuracy of components as they are not being re-positioned for second operations”.
Yamazaki Mazak told manufacturingtalk that machine tool choice for PowerKut was straightforward as the Worcester, UK-based machine tool company showed its ability to provide ongoing support.
This gave PowerKut the confidence that it can provide similar levels of support to its customers, said Yamazaki Mazak.
Everitt added: “One other factor in our decision is Yamazaki Mazak’s commitment to the UK, which is absolutely clear, and in dealing directly with the manufacturer we are guaranteed continuity in our business relationship”.
He continued: “Also of significance is the high level of technical expertise that is available at Worcester.
This gives us the confidence that we will be supported by Mazak as we develop our skills on what is a major investment in manufacturing technology.” PowerKut has customers spread across a wide range of industry sectors, including defence, nuclear power, offshore and mining, and acquisition of the Integrex is speculative to grow work further in those sectors.
