The refurbishment of an old Catholic Cathedral in Western Australia received an hydraulic boost recently with a help from compact but powerful Enerpac 700 bar technology and the skills of OSE riggers.

The gentle delicate hoist of just millimetres at a time was taken so the upper levels and roof structure of St Mary’s Cathedral in Perth could be lifted clear of the lower levels to relieve the weight on columns, arches and structures as the cathedral was widened and walls removed while being refurbished as part of a $25 million restoration.

The Flat-Jac 700 bar cylinders employed are the same compact type used for confined space lifts across a wide range of industrial applications, including mining, electrical and manufacturing machinery as well as bridges and buildings.

The St Mary’s Gothic Revival cathedral, the oldest part of which dates to 1865, is being restored to maintain its structural integrity and heritage value while eliminating rising damp, structural weakness and a crumbling bell tower.

The project will integrate parts of the cathedral built in the 19th and 20th century and provide additions so up to 1200 people can be accommodated.

“Naturally we had to take great care to preserve the integrity of this fine old building, which the Heritage Council of Western Australia says has been a landmark since the first part was built by the Benedictine brothers in 1865,” says Rob Nolan of Onsite Engineering (OSE.

OSE installed a temporary steel framework on which to place multiple Enerpac single-acting low height RSM 10 ton cylinders to lift the upper structure so it could ultimately be located on a permanent steel structure.

When this was in place, walls below could be cut out and the building reconfigured to accommodate wider and larger roof span, where one old section joins into a new section. (The lift was undertaken just clear of the scaffolding line in the pictures attached, to open up the area below).

Powered by a light (15kg) powerful and highly portable Enerpac PUJ 1200E Electric pump, the compact cylinders were selected because they could be fitted into the sometimes confined spaces in which they were required to lift, being only 43mm high before plunger extension.

The compact flat design of the 5-150 ton capacity range is designed for use where most other cylinders will not fit, with starting heights ranging from 32-100mm.

“We had to lift from 10-12 points at once, using the pump/cylinder and instrumentation combination to hoist to the point when we could pack beneath the cylinders to support the weight evenly, safely and securely,” said Mr Nolan.

Great accuracy was required as some sections, points support greater weight; necessitating different pressure, while not overloading others.

“The permanent steel support structure was then constructed and the load transferred onto it by re-jacking with permanent packing and grouting for stability. The lifting operations were trouble-free.” said Mr Nolan, who was supported by Enerpac WA territory managers, Andrew Marsh and Michael Allfrey.

Electronic gauges with digital readouts were used so that lifts could be monitored and recordered.

Enerpac RSM/RCS series low height cylinders feature maximum power-to-height ratios for confined space lifts in construction, infrastructure, machinery and mining applications.

Often used in combination with V series needle valves to control cylinder speed during lifting and lowering, they feature baked enamel finishes for corrosion resistance, hard chrome-plated steel plungers and grooved plunger ends requiring no saddle.

The RSM Flat-Jac cylinders used on the St Mary’s project feature mounting holes to permit easy fixturing. They are part of an Enerpac range of powerful but compact high pressure (700 bar, 10,000psi) lifting technologies ranging from finger-sized cylinders to models that can each hoist more than 1,000 tons.

Enerpac is also introducing to Australasia its PLC-controlled synchronous lifting technology which can minutely control massive lifts such as mining draglines, bridges, ships, buildings, turbines and oil rigs.

Taiwan – Home Safe Co. Ltd has introduced a safe that uses hydraulics and passwords.

The product is composed of exterior and interior cabinets and a password box. Valuables are placed in the 4cm-thick, high-grade steel interior section, which is fire-resistant to 1,050 C for two hours. Users have to enter the correct password and insert a unique key to open this compartment. A hydraulic mechanism then lifts it out of the exterior cabinet.

The external section is made of 20mm-thick armored heavy steel, which is explosion-resistant. This cabinet does not have a key and opens only when the hydraulic mechanism starts to raise the interior section.

The model is patented in 10 countries.

Price, delivery time and payment terms are available on inquiry. The minimum order is one unit.

Web hosting provider The Planet (http://www.theplanet.com/) has launched a Firewall promotion, the company announced yesterday. The promotion promises a discount of “up to 26% per month on its two popular Check Point solutions’, and sits alongside a range of other promotions that will last until May 31, 2008, or “while promotional supplies last”.

Environmental impact, energy, function and cost: the four hottest topics in the lift truck market are the main focus of the Rexroth trade fair exhibition at CeMAT this year

Using the AFM concept, the engine, travel drive and implement hydraulics work together specifically to reduce power consumption and emissions.

On the topic of energy, Rexroth shows how closed-centre, load-sensing systems optimise the energy efficiency of a lift truck using a variable pump.

A full driving cycle is used to determine the energy requirements of the steering, travel drive and implement hydraulics at the various phases and thus demonstrates the overall savings potential.

The cube for the function market driver sheds light on flow sharing (LUDV).
This control guarantees a constant power supply to all hydraulic consumers even when the available flow is not sufficient.
In this case, all of the lift truck functions are maintained and therefore performance is increased.
Everything revolves around cost in the final cube.
Rexroth Power Packs are an example of ready-to-install, compact units requiring minimum installation effort.

Furthermore, the lift truck manufacturers save on both effort and cost for the piping as all of the main components are integrated.

Valuable installation space is thus also saved.

Rexroth at CeMAT: hall 25, stand B20.
This year the CeMAT Expo is held in Hanover between 27 and 31 May.

Visitors to the stand will find out the latest developments and trends in mobile hydraulics through four separate focus areas - each ‘cube’ representing the four important market drivers In the environmental impact cube, the Advanced Forklift Truck Management (AFM) display shows how harmonised sub-systems can help increase the energy efficiency of lift trucks

fThe TB range c omprises four models, including 46mm and 67mm bar capacity machines, with and without driven tooling.

CMZ also said that the TB series is extremely popular as a bar-fed machine, while it also offers a maximum turning diameter of 340mm when using a 210mm chuck, which is available on the 46mm and 67mm machines.

The TB machines can now be fitted with a gantry loading robot for automated billet and shaft loading and unloading.

Integrated, oil-cooled spindle motors give increased accuracy and improved surface finish, as well as faster acceleration and braking times and they also contribute to the machine’s extremely compact design.

The whole machine occupies only around 1.6m3.

The fast, non-lift, 12-station turret features a hydraulically clamped Curvic coupling for strength and accuracy and can rotate 180 deg in just 0.5s.

The turret is clamped and unclamped while it is traversing into position, giving effective tool change times as fast as 0.15s.

Separate servo motors are fitted for turret rotation and driven tooling.

The machines are fitted with the latest Fanuc 32 series CNC, with Manual Guide i conversational programming included as standard.

Geo Kingsbury Machine Tools, launched the machines in the UK at the recent MACH 2008 machine tool exhibition.

The design allows depth of cut to be increased for maximum metal removal rate.

* Improved surface finish - as well as increasing productivity, the increased rigidity and lower machine tool vibration also ensure good surface finish of the machined part, said Index, as well as prolonging tool life and reducing noise.

The recent redesign of the range has seen these machines improved and two new models introduced with 30mm and 90mm bar capacities.

The defining characteristic of the lathes that provides such high RF and stiffness hinges on the actuation of the turrets.

Each is mounted on a front plate while an interconnected rear retaining plate is driven kinematically from behind the machine bed.

The critical advantage is that the distance between the turret centreline and the point at which it is driven is much shorter than for a compound slide.

Up to 14 tools can be used in each of the three turrets in the following manner.

* Turret 1 moves in X-,Y- and Z-axis above the spindle centreline and works at the main spindle.

* Turret 2 mounted below the spindles operates in X-, Y- and Z-axis at either end.

* The motion of upper turret 3 is restricted to the X-axis and works only with the counter spindle, which moves in the Z-axis.

Three tools can be in cut simultaneously for high productivity.

There are two sizes of machine frame, designated C100 and C200.

The former is the ‘host’ for the 30mm and 42mm bar capacity spindles and the latter (shown at MACH 2008) is for the 65mm and 90mm spindles.

Distance between the main and counter spindles is 510mm and 710mm respectively.

All models are fast, with 1G acceleration in X- and Z-axis up to 60m/min for the smaller machines and 50m/min for the larger models.

Russian valve manufacturer has chosen a Doerries Scharmann multi-tasking vertical turning centre to replace two machining centres producing ball valve housings up to 4000mm diameter.

Doerries Scharmann Technologie is to build two large, 220 tonnes, multi-tasking, vertical turning lathes for the Russian company Penztyazhpromarmatura in Penza To carry out ‘one hit’ machining of the valves, the vertical turning centres (VTC) are fitted with a 37kW boring and milling unit and a high precision C-axis in the table

The VTCs also have a rotary table that can be moved in the Y-axis to allow longitudinal milling.

A magazine with automatic head changer provides universal and angled milling heads.

A 510mm long auxiliary spindle can also be fitted, as can an NC angled disc grinding head for awkward machining tasks on the valves.

The two machining centres feature identical technology but differ in terms of their machining diameter.

1 - Contumat VC 4000/350 MC V with 4000mm diameter capacity 2 - Contumat VC 3600/300 MC V with 3600mm diameter capacity.

For machining the large work pieces, one VCT will give more performance than three to four conventional machining centres.

This will bring the customer significant savings in time, operating personnel and costs, said DST.

DST added that Penztyazhpromarmatura has been using Doerries machine tools for more than 20 years and still operate with exemplary quality - one of the reasons for coming to DST again for the VCTs.

In the past, the standard solution was to use several machines with different cutting technologies.

However, this resulted in frequent changeovers of work pieces and a need to transport them between the various machines.

As a consequence, the company had to deal with reduced quality, high tooling times, considerable manpower requirements and, above all, low productivity.

The two VCTs will be installed at Penza in February or March 2009.

DST said that just transporting the machining centres to Penza, 700 km Southeast of Moscow, will take four weeks.

The machines will be dismantled and packaged for sea transportation.

Fully assembled, they have the impressive dimensions of 13 x 14.5 x 11m, said DST.

* About Penztyazhpromarmatura - Penztyazhpromarmatura has around 2,300 employees and mainly produces valves with a rated size of 50mm to 1,500mm (ID) for media such as gas, water, oil and chemicals.

The various media and applications in pipelines, power stations, chemical facilities and offshore installations call for materials that include cast metals, high and low alloy steel and titanium.

The different designs, for example, ball, flap, non-return and gate valves, are very accurate products.

The housings for ball valves, for example, can range up to 4000mm diameter.

The DST VTCs will reduce the current bottlenecks and problems to a minimum.

Each valve will be machined by just one Doerries VTC and only has to be set up once to complete all the machining operations.

The concept is based on vertical lathes, because most of the critical cutting operations involve turning.

* About DST - Doerries Scharmann Technologie is a 100% daughter company of the Vienna, Austria, based A-TEC Industries AG.
